Summer crowds in Europe are legendary. Everyone's packed into the same popular spots, competing for the best photo opportunities and dinner bookings. But you? You're enjoying wine at a peaceful seaside café, exploring cobblestone streets all alone.
Let’s discuss my favorite places this year that offer a European summer experience, minus the expensive cocktails and crowded spaces.
➡️ Tavira, Portugal
If the Algarve is on your list but crowded beaches aren't appealing, Tavira is perfect for you. It has all the European charm — cobblestone streets, a medieval castle, flamingos in the salt marshes, and serene, golden-sand beaches like Praia do Barril. Plus, your money stretches much further here than in the usual Algarve destinations.
➡️ Kotor, Montenegro
While everyone heads to Dubrovnik, Kotor quietly rests on one of Europe's most breathtaking bays. Imagine dramatic mountain scenery, winding medieval streets, and scenic hikes offering stunning views over the Bay of Kotor, without the Game of Thrones crowds. Bonus: it's much more affordable than Croatia.

➡️ Castellina in Chianti, Italy
Many rush to Florence and Siena, but Castellina in Chianti is one of those hilltop towns where you can still enjoy a glass of wine without contending with selfie sticks. Surrounded by rolling vineyards, medieval walls, and some of the finest Tuscan cuisine you'll ever taste, it's a tranquil escape in the heart of Chianti wine country.
➡️ Šibenik, Croatia
Dubrovnik might steal the spotlight, but Šibenik? It's so underrated. Šibenik boasts a thriving food scene, with fresh seafood and local wines that rival its more famous neighbors. Plus, it's the ideal base for a boat trip through Krka National Park, where you can swim under waterfalls.
